Day 19

What a great day this has been. Louise has boxes of photos and materials. We found letters and photos of my gg grandmother, Julia Crie Dodge Tukey and her daughter Isabelle. We even have a copy of her will from 1901.

We found a fabulous photo of the Peter Mehrhof family. Peter came to this country in the 1840s with his parents and siblings. They settled in upstate New York and then Bergen County, NJ. His first wife died after the birth of their 12th child (I think I would too). This photo below shows him in 1906 (about age 70) with his second wife and various children and grandchildren. Our ggrandmother Armenia is second from the left in the second row and our grandfather Harold is in the front row on the left.

A photo of Margaret Davenport when she was about five showed a doll in a rocking chair. Believe it or not, Louise has the doll. A little worse for wear, she has a lovely maroon velvet outfit, a full length chemise and petticoat, hat, and shoes. Her legs and body are made from pink kidskin. Her hands, lower arms, head and neck are bisque and her upper arms are wood covered in the kidskin.

It was truly an amazing day. We have a couple more boxes for tomorrow afternoon after we work in the morning sorting AAUW used books for next year’s sale.

  1. I'm expecting a tome upon the completion of this trip...it must be great learning so much about the family. Looks like you're having a ball. Lots of love!
